There was little to no change at all in the way I played at 50NL, but I did notice a few differences in the type of players I ran into. There were several instances when I'd end up getting called in 2-3 spots after attempting an iso raise. Then more often than not I'd miss the flop, and with 3-4 players going to the flop I'd either be forced to cbet into a few "willing callers" or not cbet at all. Another interesting fact that I just looked up is that I got KK 45 times this month, for a whopping +$2.97, lmfao. It's just really frustrating to not be able to win at all at 50NL, when my "reads"on the tables suggests that I should be winning more. <br /><br />I am considering waiting till I have 25 buy-ins before moving back up to 50NL. This way when I get back up to 50NL I can afford to start slow and not worry about dropping down after 1 or 2 bad sessions. The only significant difference I found was an 8% decrease in my Cbet% from the first 7 to the last 7 weeks.<br /><br />...so here's what I decided to do. I am simply going to step up my Cbetting and see how that goes. Hopefully it works...<br /><br />Now for the Poker/Life lesson:<br />I was recently reminded of an important thing to remember when at a poker table. I actually was reminded of this from something that happened to me away from the tables...<br />When at the tables, always remember that no matter how cool you become with the other players, you are never on the same team. You are there only to GET YOURS, and not help anyone else. You have to just as easily check raise your best friend sitting across from you the same way you'd do to the donkey that everyone hates. If we're supposed to have TWO shutdown corners, why does everything seem to get past Dre Bly? Good call getting rid of Lynch, I guess 3 people on D that COULD takle was too much. Hey maybe I could play D next year for the Broncos. I CAN'T tackle, I CAN over run plays, and I CAN'T cover either. I'LL FIT RIGHT IN!!!!<br /><br />2. Special teams sucks: Have they made a play all year??? They're sure good at helping the opposing team make plays. <br /><br />3. .500 at Home: If the altitude can't even help them win, something must be wrong.<br /><br />4. Cutler talks a lot: Everyone knows the kid can play, and by all he's said this year, so does he. Now confidence is a good thing, but over-confidence can be his downfall. I think that over-confidence can make him complacent, and that would be a shame because he has so much potential. Now maybe I'm way off base, and since I'm no pro athelete I don't know what I'm talking about. But I do know that talking a lot and losing games like today makes anyone look like an ASS.<br /><br />5. Injuries: Now this one is no fault of their's. Shit happens. Champ was hurt for a few, so was DJ, and everytime a running back would hit some sort of stride, he'd get hurt. For example, Pittman was solid before he went down and Hillis definitely could've helped today.<br /><br />...So anyways I am seriously considering calling it quits for this season and not even turning on the game next week. To say that this month has been a learning experience is an understatement. It has been a very good learning experience though. But before I discuss the good, let's talk about the bad....<br /><br /><strong>The Bad</strong><br />1. If you've read some of my past post, you probably know that one of my main concerns has been opening up my game. I accomplished that because my VP$IP/PFR went from 12/9 to 19/14 at the start of Sept. The bad part of that was it really exposed some big leaks in my postflop play. Basically I was building pots better pre, but really misplaying a bunch of hands postflop.<br /><br />2. The first 5000 hands of the month (see graph). I think a large part of this was due to my weak post flop play.<br /><br />3. My sessions were going so consistently bad that I seriously considered giving up on the game till after my school semester was over.<br /><br /><strong>The Good</strong><br />1. Starting the month so bad really pushed me to learn from a large number of resources (books, forums, etc.). I've done as much poker reading for the last week as I have playing.<br /><br />2. It's been 7 days since I've really concentrated on my postflop play, and I've been experiencing better numbers. Can you guess where this started on the graph? Hopefully this isn't just coincidence.<br /><br />3. I've learned to better adjust my play on every street based on what I know about my opponent(s).<br /><br />4. It took me about 2000 hands to clean up the mess I made in 5000 hands. I hope it's a result of better play and not just me running good. Only time will tell though...<br /><br />...Poker has humbled me. I can't say that enough. It's funny because 6 months ago I would have said I was a good player. Now I know a 100 times more about the game, and I can't even say that I'm a good player now... and 6 months ago I was probably a horrible player!!!<br /><br />-Much props to those that play cards for a living. I'm thinking more about the game right now so school will have to wait till after the game. I'm kinda nervous about the game because the Chargers have beaten the Broncos the last 5 games they've met. What makes it worse is that some of my people from back home always make sure to let me know about it right after the game. As if I didn't know already!!!! <br /> Don't get me wrong, I'm more than confident with my team (I pick the Broncos to go undefeated every year), but like I said in my last post, it takes a 30 point lead for me to relaxed watching them play. On top of that, Cutler looked more confident than ever last week. But still, keep your fingers crossed...<br /> As far as poker goes, I guess I have a little bit of news to report. First of all I have a few "poker people" that are following me on Twitter. I find this interestiing because I don't think there is much to follow; not yet anyways. I've also patched up a few small leaks in my game. I found these in my flop game, which surprised me because I thought I was pretty solid there at the micro level. As a result, my last couple of sessions have been decent, and I hope it continues. I'm still a long ways from moving up to the next level because I've burnded through a large portion of my bankroll while trying to play a more agro game (I was such a NIT before) and finding more leaks in the process. Also I found a new bankroll management strategy which will make moving up take a little bit longer, but I feel it will better prepare me for the next levels and also allow me to reward myself for playing well. I'll probably post the strategy up sometime this week, incase anyone is interested in it...<br />That's it for now. I just lounged around my parents' house for half the time, and kicked it the other half. It was great being able to kick it with my boys again. Nobody kicks it like we do!...<br /><br />I did get a little bit of poker in at my cousin's b-day bbq, kind of. The structure was a freezeout with 30 chips w/ 1 and 2 blinds. So for those of you who know what's up, that's really leaves little to no room to play actual poker. I'd tried telling everyone to increase the chip size, but they weren't having it. I was a small winner at the end of the night though, so I guess I got nothing to complain about...<br /><br />As far as my online play goes, I did have a small winning session yesterday, but it wasn't anything to be excited about. I did find a new series of poker videos online though, and I learned a whole lot watching them yesterday. I actually found a couple of pretty bad leaks in my game. I plan on watching the same video again before jumping back online so I can work on plugging those leaks. I'm also strongly considering hooking up my lcd tv to my desktop, so I can move up to playing 6 and ultimately 8 tables. I better buy all my textbooks first before I do that(=<br /><br />At this point I still don't consider myself a winning player, but I certainly don't accept losing anymore. Of course I'm going to lose a session here and there, but I'm done being a loser in the long run. I still consider myself a break even player though, which isn't really much better. So for now I'm just going to keep learning as much as I can, and maybe i'll be able to break through one day. It wasn't at a casino, it was at a home-game. Also we were playing .10/.20 NL with a $10 buy-in. So this may not qualify as a real session for some out there, but it sure felt real to me.<br /> Anyways...<br />About a year ago (I think), I was at a friend's house where a tourney had just concluded. If I remember correctly, there were four of us left who decided to start a cash game. I think that it lasted about an hour or so and all I remember was wondering how fast I had lost my buy-in, because I thought I was playing well. In retrospect, I was probably playing really BAD.<br /> So last night I ended up at the same house for a last minute home-game. I was hoping for a cash game because I was excited to see how my online game translated to live play. When my table was set, all I knew at the beginning was that the only good player that I knew about was to my immediate right. So having position on who I marked as the best player at the table was a plus for me.<br /> As the game progressed, I noticed a few good things early. There were more than a few overbets being made on the flop. For example, there was a $5 bet into a $1.20 pot. So I decided to play tight, and hopefully take advantage of that. Also one of the guys ended up at least +$20 early. After building his chip stack, he played agressively and really took control of the table. The good thing about that was that he was the second player to my right so I'd be able to play position against him.<br /> So with that said, here are my session highlights:<br /><strong>My donk move of the night:</strong> I look at my cards and think I have A5s. So when the board plays out and the river brings a 5, this completes a flush draw but also makes a boat IF I had A5s. At this point I am up against the guy who eventually took early control of the table. I bet out hoping to get reraised, which I did. I decide to take one last look at my cards before 4betting when I realize I didn't A5s, but A3s. So I was forced to just call, and like I thought, he had the flush.<br /><strong>Most memorable pot:</strong> It was the biggest pot of the night for me. I played 44 pre and caught a set on the flop. To be honest I don't even remember the specifics of the hand. All I remember is that I was up against the big stack at the table, I think he threw out a $20 4bet after I had 3bet him on the flop. So I pushed and was called on the flop, and I was left sweating a two-outer on the turn and river. My hand held up, but I was literally shaken up by that pot. This took me by surprise because I've been shaken up by losing big pots online, but never by winning one. Good thing we took a break after that hand, because it took me a few minutes to calm back down. Looking back at it now, playing the hand out live had a lot to do with it. When playing similar hands online I'm usually talking/screaming at the computer screen as the board plays out, but I couldn't do that live. Sure you always see players (like on ESPN) making all kinds of noise at the table, but I look at them as jackasses, so I'm definatly not trying to do that. I think maintaining my composure while having to sweat those outs really got to me. Also I look at money invested in a game in terms of buy-ins rather that face value, and I think I had almost 3 buy-ins on the line in this pot, so it sure felt like a lot of money to me.<br /><br /> The session ended up lasting about 6 hours, and I guess I could chalk it up as a success. I actually ended up seeking advice from a fellow poker forum member, and ended up discovering a hitch in my game. In my attempt to loosen up my game I was actually making loose calls in situtations where I should have been making loose raises or reraises. His advice was simply to always ask myself "raise or fold?", unless I was in an obvious multiway situation. This helped me stay agressive, and left the bad calls to the other players. <br /> My downswing did drop me back down to 10NL though, so I'm hoping to move back up to 25NL as soon as possible. Well for those of you that take the game at least semi-seriously, let me explain. You remember the first time you learned about the proper starting hands to play, and how that was a major leap forward for your game. Well I once again had that type of experience. Last month I started tracking my stats and this is how I played:<br />VP$IP (voluntarily puts money in the pot): 12.41%<br />PFR (pre flop raise): 8.43%<br /><br />So in short I was about a 12/8 player, which is pretty tight. I ended up breaking even last month. So after looking through numerous sources to better my game I learned that I should be about a 20/16 player in order to play optimally. Im not there yet, but I was a 16/12 player today, which is better than last month. So aside from running pretty bad today (I'll post one of my bad beats at the end), I've never felt so in control of my game, and I've never been able to read my opponents as well as I have today (special thanks to pokertracker HUD). I'm still not close to where I want to be, and I know there's major room for improvement, but it feels good to learn new concepts. I'm probably gonna play a session today, and I'll make another post after that.<br /><br />Back on fulltilt btw. Bodog was nice to me, but I had to jump back for two main reasons.<br />1. I want to seriously work on my multi-tabling, cash games mainly. So while I can comfortably play 4 tables right now, bodog only lets you play 3 max at a time.<br />2.
